Resources

  • This presentation on Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships helps break down how important it is to students to have a scaffold of applicable lessons and choice within their learning journey: https://prezi.com/zvm3ohvyq_wl/rigor-relevance-relationships/

  • The San Bernadino City Schools You Tube channel has many videos that show best practices in the classroom. This video is an example of how to set the standard for supportive relationships with students from the beginning of the school year: https://youtu.be/ac3cGyuqlvo?feature=shared

Application

At the beginning of every class, Ethan and I have a "touch-base" conversation about how he is doing outside of our virtual classroom. Ethan has a strong future/SMART goal towards an engineering program in college, which helps guide our classes. You can see a placeholder in Ethan's spreadsheet where I would put in personal notes about his family, his activities, his interests, etc. These notes help me bring up relevant information in future classes as well as connect lessons to his interests. While not all students are as forthcoming as Ethan, I do make it a goal to identify particular interests with all students.
